Selmer Paris - Plateau Keys - Easy on the Fingers!
Product Description
Here we have a vintage Selmer Paris Series 9 Eb alto clarinet with plateau, nickel plated keys, serial number #T3938. This clarinet was manufactured in the 1960s with the intention of giving better functioning ergonomics for people who could not cover tone holes very well on the ones that used rings.

The Series 9 has chromatic keywork down to low Eb, one register pip for the high range. The side, and alternate chromatic, keys are all standard otherwise. This is a very solid clarinet when restored to playing condition. Unfortunately, this one needs an overhaul that will include addressing a crack on the lower joint that goes through two-tone holes, and a few spring replacements, as well as a general cleaning and oiling. There aren't signs of much repair on this horn otherwise, the pads, corks and materials are very old, and it's time to replace them; the horn cannot play properly at this moment.

If you'd like to include an overhaul to restore this instrument to perfect playing condition, we've included the option to do so. If you go with the repair addition, please allow for 10-week turn-around to complete the work.

Sonically, Series 9 alto clarinets have a great tone, robust low register, an upper register that is soothing and warm. Generally the plateau key horns have a bit darker and more homogeneous tone, and they play very smoothly when restored to perfect playing condition.

Players who need an alternative to the key-ring style alto clarinets would benefit from getting this one, then having it restored. Alternatively, musicians who find themselves working on films, musicals, or in studios would find the alto clarinet great for ranges the bass clarinet is lacking in.

This alto clarinet will ship in as-is condition with its original neck, bell, and Selmer hardwood case.
